Barack Obama and John McCain went all out this weekend to assure
evangelicals that they were the right candidate for the right kind of
change. If one gentleman in the audience, Tom Christian is any measure
for the kind of religious voter that McCain and Obama were going after, at Saddleback Church on Saturday, then the results might be a pretty sure thing for John McCain.
Mr. Christian is Conservative. A Republican, but he has had
difficulty deciding if he would vote for McCain or Obama. This is
typical of a lot of undecided voters across the country. "Obama always
makes a better impression," Christian said. "But McCain was clear, on
issues like life. He said life begins at conception. That's my
position. He believes what I believe. ... I like Obama. But I'll be
voting for McCain."
This last statement probably clarifies my reason for getting to be a
slightly stronger McCain follower this Monday morning. John McCain said
several things which lit my fire. He said them unhesitatingly,
strongly, without any spin and right from the hip. Frequently, before
the question was complete asked. This was political sharp shooting, par
excellence.
Life begins at conception. The unborn have rights.
Evil exists and has to be defeated.
Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior. We are all in need of his saving grace.
General Petraeus is one of America's greatest generals, who has lead us to victory in Iraq.
Meg Whitman is an American Dream story come true.
Our troops will come back but victorious against all odds.
The rich do not deserve to be punished with higher tax rates just because they are rich.
Being rich is having a family and a good job. Being able to support
your family and provide education and health care for them.
Adoption is a noble thing and should be made easier in our country.
Two things congress will never pass up - a pay raise and a vacation!
America's greatest times are ahead of her.
Finally, when asked about evil, John said that evil exists and must
be defeated. The difference is that Obama went first to the presence of
evil in out country and our neighborhoods, without mentioning Al Queda,
Osama Bin Laden or terrorists. McCain, on the other had, said, "Even if
I have to follow him to the gates of hell, I will get Osama Bin Laden
and bring him to justice." One got the feeling that John McCain had the
line from Psalm 23 in mind...."Though I walk through the valley of the
shadow do death, I will fear no evil for Thou are art with me!"
He may have been pandering to my sensibilities. I think not. I hope not.
If he wasn't simply pandering to Conservative Christians, then it's
a sure thing. I think I re-chose John McCain for the right reasons.
Here was the man who I have previously called a RINO, a liberal in
conservative clothing and some one who wasn't really my kind of
Republican, a deserter from the Reaganite Ranks, someone who was
courting the centrist ideology to net as many votes as he could. On
Staurday, at Saddleback, I saw genuine emotions, genuine faith and I
think genuine ideals.
I loved hearing the America's best times were ahead! Reaganesque to the core!!!!
I take back all my negatives. A man can change his mind. That is
what improvement and evolution is all about. If it comes from the
heart, and it's genuine, it is a good thing. I trust that John McCain
is an honest, God Fearing American. He's getting my vote without
reservations.
